RUH Eye Casualty Referrals

Published 17 Jun 2019

The RUH have asked us to remind all optometrists that there is no walk-in service for eye casualty referrals. Patients must be referred via email to ruh-tr.EmergencyEyeClinic@nhs.net and this must be via NHS.net to keep patient data secure. If it is felt that the patient needs to be seen the same day, the triage team should be called on 01225 824403 and the patient not sent down before they have been accepted, as this can cause the reception team and nurses unnecessary confrontational situations. Thank you all for your co-operation in following the correct referral procedures.

Myopia control referrals

Published 06 Jun 2019

Both the Bristol Eye Hospital and the Royal United Hospital Bath have received a number of referrals from optometrists of children for myopia control. They have asked us to send out a friendly reminder that there is no NHS provision for myopia control, and this is not something that can be done at the hospital. It is up to each individual practice to decide whether they will offer a myopia control service. There is no provision for this under GOS, so it is up to the practice to decide on a fee to provide this service. If there is no optometrist in a practice offering myopia control, we would suggest that a suitable course of action is to familiarise yourself with other local practices who provide this service, so that patients can be signposted to a practice that can offer myopia control if this is what they want. The College of Optometrists's guidance on myopia management can be found here: https://www.college-optometrists.org/the-college/policy/myopia-management.html
